Acqui Terme

Today was a great day all around.  We rode 50 miles, climbed probably 4,500 feet or so, and Lorraine and I shared lunch so I did not over eat.  The ride was quite nice, and we were aible to film some of my decending for the first time.  There are two of us that make up the “advanced” riders within our group of 16, so hopefully there will always be someone to take the extra loop with.

The downtown piazza is really special, with a long fountain that almost “defines” il centro, and many places to sit and watch the community mingle.  There is also one of the best dessert places I have ever seen – not just because of their gelato, but also because of all the beautiful looking desserts they make.

We had a wine tasting and tour of an “official” wine cellar of Piemonte (of which there are only 6 or 7 in the region), where Lorraine and I were more impressed with the architecture than we were with the wine.  However, the wine was indeed delicious, and sells locally for only 5 euro or so.

We then got a cooking lesson at the restaurant that was closed for the day, but who opened because of the relationship the owner has with one of the guides who live in that town – Enrico.  Enrico was one of the reasons we took this trip, but they ended up assigning different guides to the trip – che peccato!  Anyway, he still arranged for this private dinner and the cooking lesson was also fascinating, even for a “non-cook” like myself.  The building still had a stucco ceiling from the 16th century, and the cook had some recipies left form the 13th century – before they even had yeast to work with.  It was very cool.

I did a lot of filming today, so there should be plenty of footage to work with.
